How to Install Siding in a House

To begin any siding job, prepare the surface of the wall. This includes any framing or trim repairs that are needed.

Calculate area of wall by measuring length and height. Take note of gables or other dormers.

Layout

Most siding projects require measuring and securing trim pieces on the walls. To begin a project properly, the first thing you should do is lay out the layout on your wall with chalk lines or levels. Then mark out and measure your gablelines (from the peak of the roof on one eave-side to the lowest point in the opposite corner), using tape measures.

Install and secure J channels to all doors and windows before installing siding. These should go at the corners and overlap on rows above each window or front door. This allows water to drain freely from weep holes and not get trapped under your siding. Similarly, corners must be plumb and aligned to vertical lines of the wall for a beautiful and seamless appearance.

Sheathing

Sheathing needs to be laid before installing siding. Sheathing serves as an even surface to which siding can adhere. In addition, it acts as an insulator or moisture barrier. Depending upon the type of siding selected, flashings are also needed to divert moisture away from corners around windows or doors.

Sheathing is made of plywood, OSB, gypsum or fiberboard. Some contractors prefer insulated walls for their additional insulating qualities, while others want to keep walls as tight to studs and studs to maintain structural integrity.

It is essential to remove and clean old or damaged wall siding using a pressure washer, ladders or scaffolding, depending on the height of the wall. Also, make sure that sheathing and story poles are straight to avoid slivers appearing above or below windows or doors.

Siding

Scaffolding, or pump jack system, is an efficient way of working on walls in sections. Most tool rental stores offer such equipment. It is a safer option than ladders to build walls.

Work from the front to the back, staggering your siding seams will eliminate gaps and give you a more pleasing look. Install J channels on windows and doors to hide the edges of the soffit.

Install the first row and nail it so that the bottom lip hooks over the starter strip. Nail every piece 16 inches away, while ensuring that the nails are centered in their slots. You can also overlap each length one inch over the next if needed.

Finishing

It is a good idea, once the job is completed, to clean up the area afterward to make it look better and enhance curb appeal. Sweep dust and sweep around your home before trimming any plants, power-washing and making any cosmetic repair to improve its curb and visual appeal. This gives your siding the best possible look, and will enhance curb charm.

Many modern vinyl sidings are engineered so that they can mimic the appearance of bricks, stones or rocks. This makes them much easier to install than real bricks, stones or rocks and does not require foundations.

A stable ladder or scaffolding can be essential for vinyl siding projects. Having extra hands to help with long vinyl pieces is also a good idea. In addition, it will be easier to install vinyl siding if you remove all light fixtures, gutters and drains, and any other items attached to the house.
